Expanded Horizons

Scholarship

Background and goals

North Carolina has a proud heritage both in its people and its higher education system. Both date back many generations, over 235 years for the University and many families having been in North Carolina just as long. The great higher education system in North Carolina has few peers nationwide, and it has served it citizens well.

Times continue to change, however, as our world seems to get smaller with transportation, the internet and flexible work arrangements. There is benefit to the young people of North Carolina to look beyond our borders, and experience what the world has to offer.

Expanded Horizons hopes to encourage matriculating college freshman to consider some of the excellent schools in our neighboring states. It is our hope, but certainly not a requirement that can be predicted nor enforced, that those students who do go out of state for university will return to North Carolina and spread some of that broadened knowledge.

Eligible students

Students who have been accepted to high quality public universities outside of North Carolina, with a special emphasis on University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Clemson University, University of Georgia, Georgia Tech and the University of Florida.
